Introduction
Solar Development PLC is an Ethiopian company established in 2008 G.C. It was created with the purpose of electrifying the off-grid communities of Ethiopia to bring development to those areas and improve livelihoods. The company’s aim is to improve education, health services, farming, and create employment opportunities and enabling income generating activities.
Solar Development PLC is the preferred solar energy systems integrator by many, providing turnkey solutions for a wide range of solar systems and applications, from Pico Solar Home Systems, up to Autonomous Pillage power Supplies, Street Lighting, DC Refrigerators/freezers, Solar Pumping Systems, Solar Milling Systems, and Thermo-siphon Solar Water Heaters. Further, the company is engaged in the supply and installation of power- backup systems for grid connected areas.

Our Projects
We have successfully implemented various projects across Ethiopia and other parts of Africa. Some of our main projects include the supply and installation of solar energy systems for regional health centres and hospitals, holiday lodges, commercial centres, and individual homes.
Some of Our Projects - Current & Past Accomplished
This project consisted of the supply of Solar Box which was designed, and assembled inhouse by our engineers, before Pico Solar Home Systems were mass produced in the form we know today. The Solar Box was designed to supply energy for lighting, mobile phone charging, and small 7″ TV. The start of the pioneering role we started to play and still continue to do so by generating new ideas and implementing pilots for testing before scale up.
This project was accomplished in the year 2008. It consisted of the supply and installation of a Hybrid System, as well as Solar Water Heater for a holiday lodge located in SNNPR.
This was the start of our experience with Electrification of Health Services using Solar energy Technology. This project involved the supply and installation of Solar Systems that included a 1.4kWp and a 1.7kWp systems to supply power for lighting of operation rooms, refrigerators for storage of vaccines and medicines, and to enable the use of medical laboratory equipment. This project was funded by GIZ-Echo Program and owned by MoH of Ethiopia.
In the year 2010, we completed the installation of grid-integrated solar system at a holiday lodge located in the SNNPR.
Senior Engineers of Solar Development delivered trained the trainers (teachers) of a technical school in SNNPR to enable the school’s training centre to deliver educational training to electrical students of the school.
An orphanage Training Centre in SNNPR required power supply for a training centre. We conducted an assessment, we designed a system that met their needs, and installed the system that enabled the supply of power to the centre. The system is used as an example to the train technical students of the centre.
This project consisted of the supply and installation of 45kWp Solar system with grid integration for the school to supply power to classrooms, computers room, orphanage houses and workshops.
Completed in 2011, this project was implemented at various sites of Oromia, Amhara, Afar and SNNPR Regions.
The refrigerators operating solely with solar power, are used for storage of vaccines and medicines.
Solar Development was contracted by giz to conduct an SMA commissioning training for private solar installation companies in Ethiopia with the intension to build the capacity of Ethiopian solar installation private companies. Our senior engineers delivered the training to further develop the knowledge and skills of local installers so that they may have the ability to complete the commissioning of installed SMA systems. This contributed to the development of solar energy sector in Ethiopia.
Training of distributors of Solar Technology from several regions of Ethiopia on product knowledge, further develop their solar energy technical knowledge and business management skills to increase their capacity to deliver a higher level of customer service and product delivery to our common customer base.
We rehabilitated an existing solar system that was not operational.
The rehabilitation service was undertaken after complete assessment and reporting for a hospital in Aira. This was in addition to the supply and installation of 5kWp system.
Supply & installation of complete solar systems for the electrification of 22 health posts in the southern and western parts of Ethiopia located in Oromia and SNNPR Regional States.
The first of its kind, Solar kiosks installed in many parts of Ethiopia and Kenya in remote off-grid communities. The solar kiosks acted as market hubs to serve the communities in the off-grid areas by providing services such as battery charging, cold storage, cool drinks, entertainment, internet services, tailor services, and barber shops, while providing sales of FMCGs and dissemination of solar lanterns and solar home systems to the communities in their surrounding areas. Some of the areas where we implemented the solar kiosks include; Langano, Mezan-Teppi, Turummi, Key Afer, Omoratti, Sekker, Harrodibbe, and three sites in Kenya. Three additional kiosk systems were implemented in Ethiopia later in 2014 and 2015.
Electrified further 6 health centres in the Oromia region with Solar Energy Systems exclusively to supply electricity to maternity wards and make great contributions for the wellbeing of mothers and their babies.
We flew our engineers to Tanzania for the implementation of both on-grid and off-grid solar systems, completing the installation of a 15kWp grid connected and 11kWp off-grid PV systems for Catholic Vocational Training Centre.
The successful implementations of many solar kiosks in 2013, and the satisfaction of our clients with our work lead us to install further three kiosks in Bonga-Gedam, Bonga-Zingaj, and Bonga-Shareda.
Supply and installation of 200Wp solar systems at refugee camps’ entertainment centers for lighting and entertainment including a DSTV systems in Jewi and Terkidi Woredas in Gambella Regional State.
Six refrigeration systems implemented in Ewa, Ada’ar and Chifra Woredas in the Afar region to enable the safe storage of vaccines and medicine at health facilities.
Supply and installation of back-up systems ranging in size from 600VA to 5KVA, mainly for residential homes and commercial offices to bridge power interruptions even in Addis Ababa.
1.7kWp Solar system for supply of lighting, and mobile charging for a library, meeting halls, warehouse, and clinic in an epicentre in Wurib, SNNPR.
The proven track record in successful implementation of solar kiosks in 2013 and 2014 helped us gain more contract to develop three more solar kiosks installed in Welqite and Butajira area of SNNPR.
